HOUSING OPTIONS FOR SURVIVORS LIVING OUTSIDE OF SHELTER

If you are a victim of domestic violence and still living where your abuse occurred or the batterer can find you, you should consider your current safety. You have three primary options:

  • Go to PATH, the General Homeless Shelter intake center, and ask to be referred to the NOVA (No Violence Again) unit for placement in a Domestic Violence Shelter.
  • Move in with Friends or Family living in a safe location where your batterer will not find you.

If you do not move into a domestic violence emergency shelter, you should contact a non-residential domestic violence provider and HousingLink HelpLine at 646-472-0262 for assistance:

  • Linking to domestic violence services
  • Maintaining your current housing
  • Finding new, safe permanent housing

If you are living in a Section 8, Public Housing, or Housing Stability Plus please click here for transfer information.

If it is safe to stay in your current apartment and you are being evicted because of domestic violence, visit our Eviction Prevention section for resources to help pay rental arrears and future rent.

These are the housing programs that may be accessible to you as a domestic violence survivor living outside of shelter. Click on any of these housing programs to learn more details about the eligibility requirements and application process.

  • NYCHA Section 8:  You must meet strict victim of domestic violence documentation criteria to apply as an emergency applicant for a NYCHA Section 8 voucher. Applicants DO NOT need to be in shelter to apply for this priority.
  • NYCHA Public Housing:  You must meet strict victim of domestic violence documentation criteria to apply as an emergency applicant for Public Housing. Applicants DO NOT need to be in shelter to apply for this priority.
  • Affordable Housing:  If you are working you may be able to secure housing through one of the city’s affordable housing developments.
  • Private Housing:  You may not be eligible for any housing subsidies and may need to look for housing with your own resources. For tips on finding a new apartment with your own resources, refer to our Finding Housing section.
