Apartments in move-in condition must meet the following
requirements:
- The building address must be marked clearly on the
entrance to the building
- The apartment number must be the same number
that was registered & posted
on the door
- Apartment entrance must be secured, and the front door must lock
properly
- The apartment must have a working mailbox
- The apartment interior must be freshly painted
- The building/apartment must not contain any cracked
or broken windows
- Each floor must have one working smoke detector
- Apartment
must be vacant - no furniture
- All buildings must be decent, safe, sanitary (including
the area immediately outside the building) and vermin
free
- Floors must either be carpeted or be covered in linoleum
or parquet
- If you will be living with children under 11, there
must be window guards installed in every window. Window
gates must be Fire Department approved and provide
at least one avenue of escape
- All apartments must have at least 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom,
1 kitchen and a living room and/or dining area. All
rooms must be a minimum of 8' by 10'
- The apartment must provide privacy for the family
Room requirements:
- All rooms must have a radiator and a full size
window, facing the outside (air shafts are not
acceptable)
- The bathroom and kitchen can have a working vent in lieu of a window
- All plumbing must be in good working condition (no
leaks)
- All rooms must be hazard-free. They must have electrical
outlets and a light fixture
Bathroom requirements:
- Shower rod and towel rack
- Sink must be in good condition
Kitchen requirements:
- A door that closes properly
- Stove and refrigerator must be clean and in good
working condition
Common reasons why apartments don't pass inspections according to NYCHA:
- Broken front door locks and front doorbells
- Non-operable windows that don't close properly or
that cannot be locked properly
- No space to store or prepare food
- Non-working vents or windows in the bathroom
- Dirty sinks and bathtubs and non-working toilets
in the bathroom
- Rooms that are smaller than 8' by 10', or 80 square
feet
- The absence of an outlet and light fixture in each
room
- Cracked doors, loose paint or cracking paint
- Loose wires or other electrical hazards
- No window guards or the wrong type of guards
- Floors don't have proper floor covering - linoleum
, carpeting or parquet
- Improper heating- risers as opposed to base board
heating or radiators
