In December 2005, NYCHA began reissuing Section 8 vouchers after freezing the program for over a year. Victims of domestic violence who meet NYCHA’s documentation criteria can obtain Section 8 vouchers by filing an application at their local borough office.
NYCHA began contacting applicants on their Section 8 waiting list in December 2005 for certification interviews. Recipients of Section 8 vouchers have included:
- Victims of domestic violence who were certified by NYCHA as domestic violence applicants before Section 8 froze the program in October 2004.
- Homeless singles who were certified as homeless applicants before Section 8 froze the program in October 2004.
- Victims of domestic violence, who have applied to the Section 8 waiting list since during the program freeze between October 2004 and December 2005.
- Victims of domestic violence who have applied to Section 8 since the program reopened in December 2005.
Most Section 8 applicants who applied before the program reopened in December 2005 have been contacted and either received vouchers or were found ineligible because their documentation no longer met NYCHA’s standard for domestic violence.
In April 2006, NYCHA expanded the criteria for domestic violence eligibility. Click here for more information about the new eligibility criteria.
Victims of domestic violence with the appropriate documentation can apply for Section 8 at their local borough office. Click here to learn more about eligibility rules, how to submit an application, and general Section 8 program information.
