Project Safe Home Director

Background:

New Destiny Housing Corporation, a New York City not-for-profit that provides housing and services to low-income domestic violence survivors and others at risk of homelessness, seeks a full-time director for Project Safe Home- a new program launched in fall 2008. Project Safe Home links domestic violence shelter residents with affordable housing in low-income tax credit (LIHTC) housing. It also provides information and skill-building workshops to domestic violence shelter residents to increase their housing readiness.

The qualified candidate will report directly to the Executive Director and have the following responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day program operation to meet program goals, oversee individual case progress, and supervise program staff consisting of at least one Trainer.
  • Communicate regularly with shelter staff, property owners/managers and other program partners, supporters and stakeholders to coordinate program operations, advance program goals and nurture partner relationships.
  • Collaborate/advocate with partners and stakeholders to problem solve individual cases and broader program issues.
  • Track program data, manage program information and produce regular program reports for Executive Director, Board of Directors, funders and program partners.
  • Work with program staff and independent evaluator to conduct 3-year program evaluation.
  • Work with Executive Director to plan for program expansion and to adapt program to new opportunities and challenges.

Qualifications:

Master's degree in Social Work, Community Development, Real Estate Finance or a related field, a minimum of 2 years work experience in community organizing, program management, and/or affordable housing, and knowledge of domestic violence are required. The abilities to negotiate, prioritize goals, and bring together parties with different perspectives around a common goal are essential. Knowledge of public benefits, including housing subsidies and public assistance, is helpful. Experience with supervision and program evaluation are desirable. Other requirements include excellent speaking and writing skills, excellent judgment and professionalism, tenacity and commitment, and the ability to work independently and take initiative.

Marcello Manor Computer Lab Tech/Instructor

Background:

New Destiny Housing Corporation is a citywide not-for-profit with the mission of providing housing with services to low-income domestic violence survivors and others at risk of homelessness. At New Destiny's Marcello Manor in the Northwest Bronx, an on-site Recreation Specialist provides afternoon homework help and recreational programming for tenant children in the building's common room adjacent to the computer lab.

Job Description:

The Computer Tech/Instructor position consists of 3 hours of work, 4 afternoons a week at $13/hour. This position will involve troubleshooting and resolving computer hardware and software issues as they arise as well as providing one-on-one and group instruction to children, teenagers and adults to increase their computer competence and introduce them to new software programs.

The qualified candidate will have a demonstrated background in:

  • Troubleshooting and resolving computer software, hardware, and local area network issues for five computers
  • Proficiency with common PC applications including Microsoft Word and Excel, plus image editing software such as Photoshop
  • Competence in providing one-on-one as well as group instruction to young children through adults in single or multi-level groups to strengthen computer skills as well as familiarize them with various kinds of software
  • Advising staff on computer related issues and ideas for additional software applications useful for the computer users

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have experience managing a computer lab, possess excellent interpersonal skills, and have a commitment to working with diverse racial, ethnic and income groups. Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus. Creativity and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with other staff and volunteers is a must.
